HPV is a sexually transmitted disease; genital wart, lichen sclerosus, and vaginal wart are possible outcomes. Lesions can appear on the head or shaft of a man’s penis, or on a woman’s vulva, vagina, or cervix. There are treatments available. To reduce the risk of re-infection and recurrence of HPV lesions, simultaneous treatment of infected patents and their sexual partners is recommended. HPV can be spread by skin-to-skin contact, so condoms should not be expected to provide complete protection. This virus is usually asymptomatic and only a few virus types produce recognizable lesions.
